Hi, I’m Maureen
“Panggil gua Nonya Bong Soo.” – translation: “Call me Nonya Bong Soo.”
My full name is Maureen Foo Bong Soo, and while I am better known today as Maureen Pestana, I use the name Bong Soo in the art world because my paintings are inspired and founded on my peranakan heritage.
Peranakan Chinese are descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to the Malay archipelago and British Malaya (now called Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore) between the 15th and 17th centuries. Members of this community address themselves as “Baba Nonya”. Nonya is the term for the women and Baba for the men.
I paint from the heart and focus on things bright and beautiful. You can view some of my works at the three retail stores of Gardens by the Bay or on my website: www.peranakaninspirations.com. Original paintings, limited satin canvas prints, and cards are available for purchase. Commissions are welcome too!
I hope that my art will evoke in you as it does for me, a sense of cheerfulness, exquisiteness, beauty, and joy. “Banyak banyak kamsiah” (Many thanks).
